Ministry of Education Language Immersion Award for Teachers

AFS New Zealand is contracted by the Ministry of Education to deliver the Language Immersion Awards (LIA). These Awards are fully funded by the Ministry to improve language teaching and learning in NZ Schools. An LIA is an invaluable opportunity to be immersed in the culture of the language as a teacher, a chance to prepare students for languages, to challenge learning through total immersion in a unique and fully-funded programme.  A professional development experience for language teachers to help enhance language learning opportunities and outcomes for students.

Email for an information pack and past participant case studies.

Awards are available for teachers who are currently delivering one or more of these languages to their students in the primary or secondary sector: Chinese, French, Cook Islands Maori, Vagahau Niue, Gagana Tokelau, German, Korean, Japanese, Gagana Samoa, and Spanish.  Applicants must be fully registered New Zealand teachers by date of departure (provisionally registered teachers can apply but must be on track for their registration and fully registered by departure, a letter from your Principal must be included stating this).

Visit for more detail.

All Awards are for language, not country destination.  The funding includes: all teacher relief for the programme dates, programme airfares, insurance and related costs that are integral to the programme.  All participants remain on their New Zealand salary.

A Letter to chinese language teachers

Dear Chinese language teachers:

Hope you all have a good start at school in 2016 and everything goes well with all of you!

Again it is time for teachers to plan assessments for 2016 and mock exam papers are an important part of the plan. According to the NCEA, we are not allowed to use a full set of old exam papers for the mock exam.

Base on a successful trial in 2015 and under the ongoing support from ILEP Chinese, the New Zealand Chinese Language Teachers Association, NZCLTA, has hence organized Chinese language teachers nationwide to write listening and reading mock exam papers for Chinese Level One, Level Two and Level Three in 2016.

All the Reading exam papers include Resource Booklet, exam Question Papers and Schedule while all the Listening exam papers include a CD, CD Transcript, exam Question Papers and Schedule. The schedules could be adjusted by teachers according to the answer information from their students. Hope this team work would not only relieve the pressure of each individual teacher but also secure the quality of the exam papers.

These exam papers will be available for purchase around the mid-June 2016, including all teachers involved in drafting the mock exam papers. Part of the fee is to cover the cost for the preparation of the exam papers, CDs and postage, and part of the fee will be used to buy a gift voucher for all people involved in this project as appreciation for their contribution.

These exam papers include Level 1, 2 and 3 and 6 standards. The price of each standard is $20 for NZCLTA member and $30 for non-members. To value the hard work of all people involved and to respect those teachers who have paid for the exam papers, a kind reminder here to all those teachers who are to purchase the exam papers, will you please not share the exam papers with others?

In view of the great success in 2015, NZCLTA plans to continue the job for a few years so as to create more exam papers and build a mock exam database for teachers to select in the future.  Every teacher is also welcome to contribute to the drafting of the exam papers and any contribution would be much appreciated!

Last but not the least, we encourage teachers to join NZCLTA and the annual fee is $30 per teacher. As a member you will enjoy free workshops and discounted price to purchase the mock exam papers It is really worthy of it!  See the attached documents to join NZCLTA and tick to select the mock exam papers you would like to order.

Wish you all have a happy and successful Year of Monkey!
